According to the Center for Disease Control, nearly 30 million Americans are now affected by diabetes. Diabetes has also been known to lead to heart disease and in some cases, amputation. However, much of this is about to change.

The fight against diabetes has come a long way in recent years, thanks to significant scientific advancements and recent studies.

Now, diabetics no longer have to accept hard to swallow fact that they may die 10 to 15 years earlier than their non-diabetic friends.

In the last few months, many new treatments have begun to show promising results, and researches don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. In 2018, we have seen the first clinical trials in humans for a Type 1 vaccine 1. Although it can’t cure existing cases, the hope is that it can prevent many new ones. Poxel, a French company is nearing a Japanese market release of a drug2 that helps to reverse effects of lost mitochondria production by targeting the pancreas, liver, and muscles at the same time. Intermittent fasting is also being looked t as a potential way to control insulin levels4.

Managing diabetes is becoming easier as “needle-free” monitoring becomes more and more mainstream with various methods ranging from smartphone apps, implanted devices, all the way to Google and Novartis’ short-lived partnership on glucose-sensing contact lenses that sense glucose level in tears. 3

However, most doctors are not diabetes specialists, and it is likely your general doctor is not informed of these new treatments for diabetes.

If you or somebody you know has diabetes, do not just let your doctor determine your future. Chances are, your doctor isn’t aware of all the advancements made in treating diabetes in the last few months.

This is why it’s crucial that you conduct your own homework to find the best solution for your individual diagnosis. This is especially true if you have been seeing the same doctor for years or if you have only been diagnosed by one doctor.

Since every case is unique, so should your prognosis.
